Happy New Year! We hope y’all had a joyful holiday season!

Lots going on - read about: Winter Hours. Our 1st two Winter Gathers. Demo Day and Special Orders. Spray Deck Ordering and Installation. Additional Esquifs in stock.

It’s Time: Winter Hours

We’re shifting to a winter schedule for January, February and March.

Scheduled open hours will be:

  • Fridays: Noon to 6PM

  • Saturdays: 10am to 4pm

Looking forward to seeing you at the shop (and on the water)!

REMINDER: January 19 Winter Gather - The Canoe Center of the World: Old Town Maine??

Benson Gray, a historian with the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association and member of the Gray family, some of the founders of the Old Town Canoe Company, will talk about how a small town in Maine became, for a long while, the center of canoe building for the planet. It’s an amazing story of how a small shop grew to a worldwide phenomenon!

Old Town made beautiful wood and canvas canoes (we have a gorgeous one in the shop). Hearing about their story and the stories of the development of canoes over time gives such an appreciation for what can be done with these beautiful boats. Well worth the time.

UPDATE: February 16 Winter Gather - Introducing our presenters (you’ll want to read this…)

We’re excited to announce the speakers for the February Gathering: Tripping in Canada's Little North. Our two presenters have over a century of wilderness paddling experience between them. This experience, and their willingness to share the stories and knowledge gained over that time, make this a unique opportunity for you to listen, learn, enjoy and get your questions answered.

Speakers are:

  • Jonathan Berger has spent 64 years exploring and documenting his trips through the Canadian North. He is the co-author of “Canoe Atlas of the Little North”, described as "A landmark reference on a vast and historic area. First Nations people call it Nishwawbe-Aski, Land of the Original People. The area known as the Little North lies in Ontario and Manitoba, north of Lake Superior, east of Lake Winnipeg, west of James Bay and south of Hudson Bay." He also is a experienced sketch artist whose work illustrates the Little Atlas.

  • Bill Seely has 40 years in the bush with and around Lake Tamagami. He grew up canoeing through the Keewaydin Temagami - Keewaydin Camp system and became one of the Hudson Bay Guides - the team that leads senior campers on a 7 week self contained wilderness expedition paddle to Hudson Bay using traditional wood and canvas canoes, carrying all of their gear and supplies, and portaging using wannigans, tumplines and other traditional techniques. His experience paddling this region, especially leading a group of adolescent males safely through the adventure, provides a wealth of knowledge to share. His last trip down to The Bay was on the Attiwapiskat in 2019.

We think this is a really singular chance to chat with a couple of paddlers with a unique experience set. Join us, and spread the word!

GREAT NEWS! Wenonah is taking Special Orders again!

It’s a new year - and things are getting back on track. After two years of limited availability and only shipping pre-ordered canoes, Wenonah has just let us know that they will be accepting in-season and special orders.

What this means is that if we don’t have the specific Wenonah model, material, color or option you’re looking for in stock, we’ll be able to reach out and get it.

So, If you have a Wenonah in mind, first check with us for what’s in stock. We currently have 11 in the shop and 23 on order. Models include:

  • General Touring: Heron, Aurora, Spirit II, Wilderness Solo

  • Performance Touring: Adirondack, Escapade, Minnesota II

  • Sports&Leisure/Outifter: Wee Lassie (12’6” & 10’6”), Fisherman, Kingfisher, Backwater (square stern), Basswood Solo

  • Downriver: Prospector 16’

If we don’t have what you’re looking for, we’ll work with you to define the specifics and put in the special order. Note: Wenonah queues special orders as they are received so early orders will mean earlier delivery.

Oh, by the way, the gentleman on the left in the picture is Mike Cichanowski, the founder and still owner of Wenonah.
